Tamil Nadu continues to grapple with relentless heavy rainfall, leading to the closure of schools in Chennai on Thursday. This prolonged spell of downpours has significantly disrupted life across the state, especially in the capital city of Chennai, causing severe waterlogging and widespread traffic congestion.

Wednesday witnessed unrelenting heavy rainfall throughout the day, escalating in intensity by evening, amplifying traffic snarls across Chennai. Key areas like Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur experienced severe waterlogging, exacerbating the challenging conditions.

The impact of the heavy rains extended beyond Chennai, affecting neighboring districts such as Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram. Consequently, the respective district administrations announced the closure of schools in these areas on Thursday to ensure safety amid the adverse weather conditions.

IMD Alerts and NDRF Precautions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Chennai and adjacent districts on December 2 and 3, cautioning about the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This alert has raised concerns and prompted precautionary measures as the persistent downpours have already disrupted normal life.

In response to the IMD's cyclone warning, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stands on standby in Arakkonam town, prepared to respond to any emergency situations arising from the inclement weather conditions.

IMD's Weather Forecast

The IMD's weather forecast predicts moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall across various areas in Tamil Nadu and adjoining regions until Thursday morning. The forecasted regions include Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Cuddalore, among others. This forecast stresses the need for heightened precautions and preparedness among residents and authorities to navigate through the ongoing challenging weather conditions.
