Residents in Delhi-NCR and northern India experienced mild tremors on Thursday following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Afghanistan. The seismic activity, originating in Afghanistan, had a ripple effect, reaching as far as Delhi and parts of northern India. The National Center for Seismology promptly shared details, stating, "Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan."

The tremors prompted immediate concern among residents, as buildings swayed and people rushed to open areas for safety. The earthquake's impact was not limited to India, with Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cities also feeling its effects. Authorities in the affected regions activated emergency response measures, assessing potential damages and ensuring preparedness for any aftershocks.

This seismic event comes on the heels of another earthquake on January 4, when Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district experienced a magnitude 3.9 quake. The National Centre for Seismology confirmed the epicenter near Kishtwar, occurring at 12:38 am, with coordinates at latitude 33.34 degrees north and longitude 76.67 degrees, at a depth of five kilometers.

The recent earthquake activity in Afghanistan and the Kishtwar district underscores the geological vulnerability of the region. Authorities are on high alert, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. The National Center for Seismology continues to monitor the situation, providing critical information to aid in managing the impact of seismic events on communities in the affected areas.

As residents grapple with the aftermath of these earthquakes, concerns about potential damages and the need for structural evaluations of buildings have been raised. The local populace is urged to remain vigilant, and authorities are conducting assessments to gauge the extent of the impact on infrastructure. The seismic events serve as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of tectonic activity and the importance of community readiness in regions prone to earthquakes.

In light of these seismic occurrences, there is a renewed focus on strengthening building codes and infrastructure to mitigate potential damages from future earthquakes. The affected regions are now in a state of heightened awareness, with ongoing efforts to address immediate concerns and enhance long-term resilience to seismic events.
