WHO TB Reporting Model Not to be Followed in India:-
India has learnt its lessons from the experiences of WHO during the COVID pandemic. WHO’s COVID reporting model did not prove to be an effective measure to know the on-ground authentic reports. Likewise, the WHO also exercises its WHO TB reporting model.
India’s Plan on Not Following the WHO TB Reporting Model
India will not be following the already established WHO TB reporting model given some of its flaws. To replace the same in India, the country has developed its own TB reporting model using which the Annual TB Report of India will be released in March 2023 itself whereas WHO will be releasing its report in October, 2023.
India’s Own TB Reporting Model Replacing WHO TB Reporting Model
India has earned another feather in its cap by becoming the first country to have developed its own indigenous mathematical model for TB reporting that will be implemented country-wide. In the 36th Stop TB Partnership Board meeting, the model was showcased before 40 countries and a majority of the countries applauded the model and expressed their desire to implement it in their own countries as well.
Statements by Authorities
Commenting on the merits of the Indian TB reporting model over the WHO TB reporting model, an official from the Indian Ministry of Health reportedly stated, “WHO estimates are based on modeling studies whereas our TB reporting is based on actual numbers recorded on the Nikshay portal, and therefore more reliable.” She also added more details, “The 2022 dataset generated by us shows 27.7 lakh were diagnosed and 3.2 lakh died. This is lower than the WHO figure and in spite of significant improvement in the notification of the disease.”
