Updates on The Sikkim Avalanche: 7 Dead in Nathula, More Believed to be Trapped, Rescue Operations Underway

 Tsongmo, a well-known tourist spot in Sikkim, was severely avalanched on Tuesday, close to Nathula Pass. According to a news agency, seven individuals died due to the natural calamity. Up to now, 22 travelers have been saved.

 The Indian Army has said that it is believed that five to six vehicles and between 20 and 30 tourists who were traveling to Nathula got stuck in the snow. At least 150 visitors are reportedly suspected to be trapped in the avalanche, according to local news sources. Social media saw the emergence of videos of captive stories.

 According to a news source, 30 tourists stranded in the snow were freed and treated at STNM Hospital and Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok. A senior police official added, “Rescue and clearance efforts are underway.” Sikkim Police, the Skikkim Travel Agents Association, tourism department representatives, and vehicle drivers are all involved in rescue activities.

 

On the microblogging site Twitter, rescue operation videos have surfaced. Due to its breathtaking scenery, Nathula Pass, located on the border with China, is a popular tourist attraction. According to local news accounts, the event happened at 12:20 PM. On the

Videos of the rescue efforts taking place close to the Nathu La Pass avalanche location were provided by the Indian Army. According to Loden Lepcha, people were shooting pictures next to a stream when the avalanche struck, according to Reuters. Images supplied by India’s Ministry of Defense showed rescuers using shovels to dig near a waterfall.

 

The pictures showed a piece of heavy yellow equipment clearing the avalanche’s churned-up snow. According to the news report, the lost tourists included four men, one woman, and one child. They suffered severe injuries as a result of the natural tragedy.

 

Tourists were allowed until the 13th Mile but were pushed to the 15th Mile, where the incident occurred, according to an SP Gangtok IPS Tenzing Loden Lepcha Police source in a local news report.

 Sonam Tenzing Bhutia, the inspector general for checkpoints, has provided information “Tourists are accessing the 15th Mile even though passes are only valid for the 13th Mile. The incident happened in mile 15.”

 According to the SP, the tourists were at the illegal 17th Mile mark when the avalanche occurred. Border Roads Organization immediately began rescue efforts, and as of today, 22 individuals have been saved, including six from a deep valley, according to rescue workers.

According to officials, over 350 people and 80 vehicles are trapped on the route to Nathu La due to the snowfall.
