In what is known as the first two confirmed cases of babies born after contracting COVID-19 in their mother's womb, research undertaken by the University of Miami shows that it affected their brains.
It is believed that the virus was transmitted through the placenta of their mothers, who had contracted the virus during the second wave of COVID-19, the Delta variant era.
Published in the pediatric journal,
the report further stated that the lack of vaccines made it further severe.
The babies, one of whom died at 13
months and another who had been hospitalized, is suffering considerable
developmental delays and seizures since the day of birth.
However, neither of them had tested
positive for COVID-19 at birth, but there was a high amount of presence of antibodies
to the virus in their blood, as told by Dr. Merline Benny, a neonatologist at
the University of Miami.
During pregnancy, one of the mothers
hadn't suffered severely but underwent mild symptoms carrying the baby for a
full term, despite testing positive for COVID-19. The other mother, however,
had become severely sick and had to deliver the baby at the gestation of 32
weeks.
In another study, though traces of
the virus were found in the placentas of both the mothers and in the brain of
the child, the strain causing the disease is disputed. There is no clarity on
whether the strain is Delta or an Omicron-related variant.
The women are, however, urged to get
vaccinated against COVID-19. Obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Shahnaz Duara
have also advised pregnant women to inform about these situations to their
child's pediatrician to check for developmental delays.
