In a devastating incident, four Indians, including two women, lost their lives in a mass drowning at an unpatrolled beach in Philip Island, Victoria, Australia. The tragedy unfolded around 3:30 pm (local time) on Wednesday when emergency services responded to reports of four individuals struggling in the water near Newhaven.

Life Saving Victoria, the state agency for water safety, was called to assist the distressed individuals near Forrest Caves on Phillip Island, just a few kilometers from the patrolled lifeguard site. Off-duty lifeguards and rescue boats were involved in the rescue efforts, with three people pulled from the water by off-duty lifeguards and the fourth person rescued by a Life Saving Victoria boat, as explained by Kane Treloar, the agency's commander.

The identities of the victims, a man, and two women in their 20s, along with a woman in her 40s, remain undisclosed. The Indian High Commission in Australia expressed condolences on social media, stating that the Consulate General of India in Melbourne was in touch with friends of the victims. Victoria Police Eastern Region Assistant Commissioner, Karen Nyholm, termed this tragic incident as the worst drowning case in decades. Nyholm revealed that the victims included a 43-year-old woman on holiday in Australia, while the other three victims resided in the Melbourne suburb of Clyde. Three individuals, a man and two women, succumbed at the scene, while a woman in her 20s was rushed to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne but, unfortunately, did not survive.

"This tragedy has taken the lives of four people, and it’s fair to say the impact will be profound on those families," remarked Nyholm. The incident marks a somber event in Victorian waters, raising concerns about beach safety protocols.
