A disaster, in the form of a powerful tornado, has caused widespread destruction in the city of Mississippi claiming the lives of twenty-six people, including a Person from Alabama.

About The Catastrophe

Nicholas Price, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson, Mississippi, reported that the tornado covered some 170 miles (274 km) long and lasted for an hour. The worst-hit town was the rural town of Rolling Fork in western Mississippi, with a population of around 1900. According to reports, homes have been reduced to rubble, tree trunks have snapped like twigs and cars are tossed aside like toys, while the town's water tower lay twisted on the ground. Residents of Silver City, a rural community of around 300, confined themselves to their inner rooms, using bathtubs as a shield to protect themselves against the tornado. The Morgan County Sheriff's Office has reported a death in Alabama due to the storm, causing the man to plunge deep into mud after his trailer overturned.

Help on Its Way

A state of emergency has been declared in the affected areas by Governor Tate Reeves. "The scale of the damage and loss is evident everywhere affected today, Homes, businesses ... entire communities", he tweeted. Three emergency shelters, including one at National Guard Armory in Rolling Fork, have already been set up by Mississippi officials.

US President Joe Biden has offered full federal support to the Governor, announcing "To those impacted by these devastating storms, and to the first responders and emergency personnel working to help their fellow Americans, we will do everything we can to help. We will be there as long as it takes. We will work together to deliver the support you need to recover." The White House has declared that Director Deanne Criswell will Travel to Mississippi on Sunday.
