 Jinping:-
Have you heard the proverb, "If you want to win a race, run alone?" Chances are, you didn't! (I don't exactly know if it exists) But if you look at Xi Jinping's run for power, you might believe it does.  The National People's Congress, a unicameral legislature with almost 3000 members, has officially confirmed Xi Jinping as the President of the country for a record third time. Earlier, no President has served China for more than two tenures. Jinping Jinping The 69-year-old went on to win the elections for the Presidency comfortably, as the post remained "uncontested." He was voted by the Chinese lawmakers comprising the seats in the National People's Congress. But what makes Xi such an astute personality in Mainland China? Is it his progressive policies that won over the National People's Congress, or his authoritarian nature that forced the Chinese lawmakers into voting for the man of the moment?  One thing on which you can't argue is the fact that the road to victory wasn't paved for Xi; he "cleared" it himself! Whether by changing the existing policies or sending his opposition to jail, he left no stone unturned in his pursuit of power.  Xi's exponential rise to power is often credited to his triplet of policy. Firstly, the anti-corruption campaigns he launched after becoming the President in 2013. Many might argue that it was a blatant move in the face of adversity. One might also argue that Xi took over the reins at times when the economy was sluggish, while corruption was on the rise, and his anti-corruption agenda was just and fair.  But one can't argue the fact that Xi Jinping used the anti-corruption card for his own advantage, as he "clean bowled" some of his prominent political rivals, including Zhou Yongkang and many more, and sent them behind bars. Secondly, putting people "loyal" to him in vital positions in different offices has helped Xi in the cause. A simple google will give you the stats and establish a deep-rooted connection between top officials in the National People's Congress and beyond with Xi and his family.  Thirdly, one might also contribute to Xi's bending of rules to favor his stay in power. Breaking decade-long rules, like abolishing the age limit for an official or the removal of Presidential terms, Xi has brought on comprehensive policies to remain seated as the head "for life." With China heading toward dethroning the US as the global powerhouse in the following years, Xi's tenure is nothing sort of a two-edged sword for sure. He has taken over the mantle at extreme lows and led the country to economic prosperity, which exceeded everyone’s expectation.  Under Xi, China has become the "tech hub" of the entire planet, for which he deserves the necessary appreciation. The country's focus on green tech to control pollution, the vast expansion of the military, and even the anti-corruption campaigns have all contributed to his rise in power.  But people worldwide can't forget the horrors of Covid-19 and China's pivotal role in the spread of the pandemic! The rise in tension between China and the West, often taking the shape of the Cold War II, is another negative aspect Xi has in his CV.  Recently, the world has also witnessed growing tension between China and Taiwan. With the war between Russia and Ukraine in no mood to end soon, we aren't ready for another clash, precisely an invasion. The election of Xi by the National People's Congress for the third time might cause the West more headaches, and don't be surprised if any more sanctions come China's way.  However, the sanctions imposed by the West could have fatal repercussions on Taiwan and worldwide. We will not be going into the nitty-gritty of the event today. (Having said that, if you are interested in reading more about the possible consequences of the sanctions by the West, I have already covered it) Jinping Jinping With the country slowly recovering both economically and mentally from Covid-19, it will be interesting to note the developments in China under Xi Jinping. It will also be interesting to note the developments in the West, particularly after the "announcement" of Xi Jinping taking over the Presidency for another five long years!
