Significance of Indian Leadership

The "Global South" mostly comprises those countries which were British colonies earlier and have remained marginalized for a long time in global politics. It implies that their needs and opinions are given minimal importance in the community of nations.

With such a setup, a country must take up the responsibility of ensuring that their voices are heard, and their priorities are kept at par with global priorities.

The Voice of Global South Summit by India

A step already taken by India along these lines was the Voice of Global South Summit, 2023, which had 125 countries as attendees. All countries have committed to the central idea of the Summit— ‘Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose.’

At this Summit, India announced that it would be taking advantage of its coveted position in the G20 Presidency to strengthen the voice of the global South and make it audible to the developed nations. With this brave move, India made its way to becoming a diplomatic leader for the global South

Fields of Cooperation

Agendas raised by India for cooperation and progress in the global South include addressing issues such as the crisis of 3Fs— ‘Food, Fuel and Fertilizer’. Clean energy in the form of alternative renewable energy sources is yet another field that has been considered.

The idea of a “Global Biofuel Alliance” has been proposed in this regard. Apart from this, the ‘Aarogya Maitri’ scheme was announced by the Central government Under which essential medical supplies would be provided to developing countries in the face of the pandemic or any urgent crisis.
