Spain defeated hosts Germany 2-1 in extra time in a thrilling Euro 2024 quarter-final. Substitute Dani Olmo scored and assisted Mikel Merino's late winner. Spain's "insatiable" team advances to face France in the semi-finals, despite upcoming suspensions for key players.

The group phase game between Spain and Germany, in what could have been a final, ended 2-1 in favor of Spain after extra time to qualify for the Euro 2024 semi-finals. The game fully met the expectations, as both teams were recognized as one of the best in the tournament, having qualified for the final stage of the competition on July 5, 2024.

This was despite losing possession for much of the game until substitute Dani Olmo scored the opener and created the build-up to Mikel Merino’s 119th-minute winner. Germany’s Florian Wirtz equalized the score in the 89th minute, which saw extra time headed to a dramatic finale.

Spain’s hero Mikel Merino said, “It was a very tough match, but also very exciting and it was clear it was the match we have been waiting for between two of the best teams in the world, it could have been a World Cup final or European Championship final. ”

The coach of Cuban team, Luis de la Fuente, said that his team has unlimited desire to win and called them as ‘winning horse’. The coach expressed that all his players have competitive level experience and they want to go to the next round.

The match was quite heated and of the 15 cards produced, they where all yellow cards, the second highest in the history of the European Championship. Spain will have to do without its first choice defenders Dani Carvajal and Robin le Normand when it takes on France in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Spain has been very effective in the campaign where they have recorded fantastic performances against Croatia, Italy and Albania in the group stage as well as Georgia in the last 32 stage. Lamine Yamal (16 years) and Nico Williams (21 years) have been the rising stars who have performed exceedingly well for the team, even though they were substituted during this closely contested quarter-final match.

As Spain sets the stage for their semi-final match against France, they face the hurdles of having some players suspended and others possibly out due to injuries Most notably, a key player – midfielder Pedri – had to be substituted in the game.

The victory demonstrated Spain from another facet as they were able to win it in a very physical match. In the words of former Scotland winger Pat Nevin, the team is not just aesthetically pleasing to the eye but also has character and hardness.
