Sardar Patel:-
We all have heard about many who gave their lives for the Freedom of our Motherland. There is one man who should get the credit for uniting a nation known as India and that one man is none other than Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel who is also known as the “Iron Man of India”. He is one of the most prominent figures in India's freedom struggle and post-independence history. He was a great leader, lawyer, and politician who played a significant role in India's integration as a nation.
Early Life and Education of Sardar Patel:
31st October 1875 in Nadiad, a small village in the present-day state of Gujarat is where born the Iron Man of India. His father, Jhaverbhai Patel, was a farmer, and his mother, Laad Bai, was a simple housewife. Patel had his primary education in Karamsad, a nearby village, and later moved to Petlad for his high school education. In 1897, he moved to England to pursue law studies and became a barrister in 1913.
Life in Politics of Sardar Patel:
After returning to India, Sardar Patel began his political career by joining the Indian National Congress. He was an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi and supported his non-violent struggle for India's freedom. Patel played a significant role in the Salt Satyagraha in 1930 and the Quit India Movement in 1942.
One of Patel's most significant contributions to India's freedom struggle was his role in the integration of princely states. After India gained independence in 1947, there were over 560 princely states in the country, each with its ruler. Patel was appointed as India's first deputy prime minister and was given the responsibility of integrating these states into the newly formed Indian Union.
Through a combination of diplomacy, persuasion, and sometimes even coercion, Patel was able to convince most of these states to join India. His efforts helped prevent India from breaking up into smaller fragments and consolidating it into a united nation.
To honor him for his outstanding work, Gandhiji and the whole nation named him “The Iron Man of India.”
Sardar Patel, an Inspiration to the Nation:
Sardar Patel's legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians. His contribution to India's freedom struggle and his efforts to integrate the country has made him an iconic figure. The Indian government celebrates his birthday as National Unity Day. His statue, the tallest in the world, has also been named as Statue of Unity. This statue, standing at 182 meters, pays deserving tribute to him for his magnificent contribution to the nation.
Sardar Patel's involvement in India's freedom struggle has been widely recognized both in India and abroad. In 1991, the government of India posthumously awarded him the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. He is also widely regarded as one of the architects of modern India.
