President Presents The Coveted Padma Awards 2023:-

On 5th April 2023 (Wednesday), President Draupadi Murmu presented the Padma Awards 2023. 47 Padma Shri, 3 Padma Vibhushan, and 5 Padma Bhushan awards were conferred at the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on the occasion of Civil Investiture Ceremony-II. Earlier, Civil Investiture Ceremony-I was organized on 22nd March 2023.


The Awardees:

A Padma Vibhushan award is posthumously presented to former UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav. His son, Akhilesh Yadav, accepted the award on his behalf. Further, Thounaojam Chaoba Singh, Manipur’s ex-deputy CM, and Kushok Thiksey Nawang Chamba Stanzin, a spiritual leader of Buddhism, have been conferred Padma Shri awards.

In the field of social work, the co-founder of Infosys, Sudha Murthy, received a Padma Bhushan award. ‘Super 30’ founder and philanthropist teacher Anand Kumar was also awarded a Padma Shri. In the field of arts, the composer of the Oscar-winning song ‘Natu Natu,’ MM Keeravani, was conferred a Padma Shri award.


The Padma Awards Explained:


106 Padma awards were announced by the Indian President on 26th January 2023. Out of these 106 awards, 55 awards were presented on April 5, 2023. The criteria for receiving a Padma Award varies concerning each type of award- Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan.


Padma Shri awards (fourth highest civilian awards) are conferred to those who have made “distinguished contributions in various spheres of activity including the arts, education, industry, literature, science, acting, medicine, social service, and public affairs.” 


The Padma Bhushan Awards (third highest civilian awards) are presented to individuals who have provided “distinguished service of a high order...without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex”. The Padma Vibhushan is the second-highest civilian award after the Bharat Ratna, and all persons are eligible for this prestigious award.


The Way Ahead:


The Padma awardees are all set to visit the National War Memorial, Amrit Udyan, Rashtrapati Bhavan, and the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya today, 6th April 2023 (Thursday).
