Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar suggested that opposition leaders may hold a meeting in Patna after the Karnataka assembly polls, as many will be preoccupied with the election campaign. The JD(U) leader implied that the conference would discuss the topic of opposition unity and could be a crucial step in the formation of an alliance against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The discussions at the meeting would centre around the formation of an alliance of opposition parties to take on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Nitish Kumar's remarks come amid growing calls from the opposition for a united front to counter the BJP's dominance in national politics.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently met with Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav in Kolkata on April 24th, where she requested her counterpart to organize a meeting of all non-BJP parties in Patna. Banerjee emphasized the need for opposition unity before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and suggested that a meeting in Bihar, where Jayaprakash ji's movement started, could help determine the future course of action. The proposed all-party meeting in Bihar could serve as a platform to discuss the potential strategies and collaborations for the non-BJP parties in the future.
Kumar responded positively to the request made by his TMC counterpart and stated that Mamata Banerjee had expressed her desire to meet in Patna. He also shared his efforts to bring together various political parties in the country to challenge the current BJP-led central government.
During his recent meetings with opposition leaders, Kumar emphasized his goal of uniting different political parties against the BJP before the upcoming general elections. He further added that he would continue to engage with other non-BJP parties to further this objective.
In a recent development, Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi Yadav, after meeting with Mamata Banerjee, have reportedly discussed the possibility of forming an alliance with the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav. The TMC and SP, who had previously aimed to maintain an equal distance from both the Congress and BJP, seem to have shifted their stance. Kumar and Yadav have also met with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge earlier this month. These meetings indicate a potential coalition of opposition parties for the upcoming elections, although no formal announcement has been made yet.
Kumar met with Arvind Kejriwal and urged all opposition parties, including Congress, to unite and defeat BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He believes that a united front can reduce BJP's seats to less than 100. This was discussed during the 11th general convention of CPI-ML in February in Patna, which supports Kumar's Mahagathbandhan government.
Amid speculations of joint efforts to forge opposition unity against the BJP, JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar met with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad in Bihar. Prasad had returned to his hometown after undergoing a kidney transplant in Singapore, and he and Kumar have a longstanding political association since their student leader days in the JP Movement of the 1970s. While Kumar has denied ambitions to become PM or a contender for the post, the two leaders are expected to work together in opposition efforts.
