Malawi's Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others died when their military plane crashed in bad weather, President Lazarus Chakwera announced after the wreckage was found.

Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera says a plane with Vice President Saulos Chilima’s wreckage has been recovered from the crash site with no survivors.

Chilima and nine others were on the military aircraft, which vanished from the radar on Monday morning while operating within the country’s domestic airspace under poor weather. While in Chikangawa Forests searching for the crashed plane for a whole night, Chakwera claimed that the Malawi Defence Force found the completely wrecked plane.

“My fellow Malawians, I regret to bring this sorrowful news to you,” Chakwera said in a briefing, he described Chilima as ‘a good man, a devoted father, and a formidable VP’, Chakwera added the death of Chilima is one of the great honours of my life.

The vice president is 51 years old, and he was on the road to represent the government at the burial of a former minister. This aircraft took off from Lilongwe but was forced to return because of low visibility and was never seen again until it disappeared midway through a flight from Lilongwe to Mzuzu.

Among these was the former First Lady Shanil Dzimbiri. Chakwera stated that the remains are being taken to Lilongwe, while more details regarding the funeral are yet to be announced.

Chilima, who has a business background, had been Chakwera’s running mate in the presidential election since 2014 after joining the UTM party from the main opposition Malawi Congress Party. He was an influential and friendly face with youth but had been charged with corruption last year but the charges were dismissed.
