On Friday, Navneet Kaur Rana, the
independent Member of Parliament from Amravati, criticised the opposition's
decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building.
The actor-turned-politician added
to the ongoing controversy regarding the inauguration of the new Parliament
building by suggesting that the opposition is not happy due to the fact that a
prominent BJP leader had achieved what they could not.
News agency ANI quoted her
stating, “The old Parliament was built by the British but the brain and work
behind the new Parliament is of Indians and I don’t understand, why the
opposition is making so many issues. They’re upset with the fact PM Modi has
done what they (opposition) couldn’t. They have problems with PM Modi.”
While the Amravati MP considers the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building to be a moment of pride, she said that she was unable to comprehend why the opposition has made such a demand.
The heated debate surrounding the
inauguration of the new parliament is the opposition's belief that the
President, as the head of the nation, should inaugurate the new parliament,
rather than the Prime Minister. According to the opposition parties, if the
inauguration is performed by the Prime Minister instead of the President it is
disrespectful to the "high office of the President." This has
resulted in controversy and a joint statement issued by nineteen opposition
parties, including the Congress and Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party, announcing
their decision to boycott the event.
