Effectively, the industry was trained to pay big money for the men's World Cup and treat the women's equivalent as worthless. At the same time, the women were told they didn't deserve prize money or equal pay

Former FIFA Council member Moya Dodd has blamed FIFA for undervaluing the Women's World Cup.

Gianni Infantino, the current president of FIFA, had warned that this year the Women's World Cup may face a broadcast blackout in Europe. This statement was criticised by Moya Dodd, who held FIFA  responsible for the historical undervaluation of the women’s tournament. There is news that this year for the first time the Fédération Internationale de Football Association is selling broadcasting rights separately to the men’s and women's tournaments. FIFA President Infantino has prophesied that Europe's "Big 5" nations will face a blackout unless broadcasters improve on their "unacceptable" offers. While for the men’s tournament broadcasters from Spain, France, Italy, Britain and Germany have offered  $100 million-$200 million for the rights, for the Women’s World Cup only $1 million-$10 million have been offered.

Dodd is of the view that the broadcast industry undervalued the women's tournament as FIFA sold the rights together with the men's. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, the ex-Australia international said,

Dodd is of the view that the broadcast industry undervalued the women's tournament as FIFA sold the rights together with the men's. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, the ex-Australia international said, "Now that FIFA has decided to sell the rights separately, it's no surprise that the buyers don't want to pay the same big numbers twice."

"Effectively, the industry was trained to pay big money for the men's World Cup and treat the women's equivalent as worthless. At the same time, the women were told they didn't deserve prize money or equal pay because they didn't bring the revenues. "It's actually quite outrageous. For FIFA to now say that all women's revenues will go straight into women's football overlooks the fact that the value of the women's rights have until now been used to inflate the value of men's football", Dodd added.

She also said, “If in fact the Women's World Cup gets 50-60% of the viewers of the men's, as FIFA says, that should amount to a sum in the billions". As of now, FIFA has not officially reacted to her comments.
