Morbi Bridge Collapse: Tourist Attraction Became Death
Trap
The 137 years old British-era
suspension bridge reopened and gave way to people on Wednesday after the
renovation work of the Morbi bridge. The horror in the town of Morbi is one of
the worst tragedies in India.
The Morbi footbridge reopened 5 days
earlier after completing repair so what went wrong?
The residents and Police are accusing
the construction company who had done the repair work. Around 141 people had
died and it’s been three days rescue work is still in process. Many people lost
their families in the Morbi bridge collapse. Many funerals have been done in
Morbi. This incident has broken down many families.
The question rises of how a tragedy
of this scale could happen and why prevention is not done.
The bridge was reopened the last
Wednesday for the people of Morbi on the occasion of the Gujrati new year.
The owner of Oreva group Jaysukh Bhai
Patel told in a press conference the renovation work had cost 20 million rupees
and the company contracted to maintain and operate the bridge since 2008. The
full responsibility for the bridge is in the latest contract that was signed in
march of this year. After investigating how the contract has been assigned and
how the maintenance work has been done.
According to the Chief officer of
Morbi municipality Sandeep Singh Jhala, the bridge was opened without informing
the municipality and they did not have any knowledge of whether the fitness
certificates were obtained by the firm or not.
The words of the Oreva group owner
“Nothing will happen to the bridge for the next 8-10 years. And if it’s used
responsibly, the bridge will need no repair for 15 years”.
Since the Sunday accident, police
have arrested the nine people related to Oreva which includes two managers and
two ticket clerks and two contractors, and three security guards as well. They
are being investigated for the allegation they face with associated Oreva on
the Morbi bridge accident.
Pm Modi Chaired A Meeting On Tuesday
In Gujrat
PM Modi has personally been involved
in rescue operations for the Morbi bridge over the Machchu river collapsed on a
Sunday evening. Prime Minister Narender Modi chaired a high-level meeting in
Morbi, Gujrat to review the situation of the unfortunate incident killing at
least 141, people. It is been expected that the death toll could rise further,
residents believed more than 200 people are present on the bridge and the death
toll can rise.
PM Modi met those people who are
participating in rescue and relief operations. The rescue operation is still in
process in the Machchhu river. PM also met the injured and families of the
deceased and kept the hand of sympathy on their heads and assured them he and
India is with them during this hard time.
Ex-gratia announced for Morbi
victims, 4 Lakhs will be given to the families of the deceased by the state
government and 2 lakhs from PMNRF, and 50000 will be given to the injured
victims. Announced by the Gujrat Disaster Management minister Rajendra Trivedi
on the Morbi bridge collapse.
