Michael Capps, the co-founder and former President of Epic Games, has issued a warning against the utilization of AI for significant decision-making purposes. According to Capps, relying on Black Box Artificial Intelligence to make crucial determinations is not advisable owing to concerns over the lack of transparency surrounding the decision-making process of this technology.

The complete opposite of explainable AI (XAI), the term ‘Black box AI’, which found its origin during WWII from Great Britain’s Royal Air Force, is that form of artificial intelligence whose decision-making processes are so complex that they cannot be easily understood by humans. The lack of transparency is concerning because it makes it challenging to understand how the AI arrives at its decisions.

As these recent advancements are coming more into the public's view, it seems to incite excitement as well as apprehension among all. But, the American video game designer and business executive, said, "The whole idea of a black box is you’re not allowed to look inside and see, and that’s what we have with these artificial neural networks, with hundreds of billions of nodes inside of a box, that nobody can look

into."

While using ChatGPT as an example, Capps stated, "These black box systems, where you can’t see what’s going on inside, can do some amazing things". Although he praised it for its capability, he also explained the issue, stating, "Nobody knows exactly why it gave you the answer it did. You can kind of guess, because you know what it’s seen, you know what we trained it on, so you can kind of guess where it came up with that, but you’ll never know for sure."

As advancement in technology increases, concerns about its independence is also rising.
