Renowned as the greatest running back in professional football and a prominent advocate for civil Rights, Jim Brown has passed away at the age of 87, as confirmed by his family. With an illustrious career in athletics, his involvement in the film industry, and his commitment to social activism, Brown left an indelible mark on the world.

Surrounded by his loving wife, Monique, he peacefully departed at his Los Angeles residence, leaving behind a grieving family who knew him not only as an activist, actor, and football star but also as a cherished husband, father, and grandfather.

Brown’s remarkable legacy in football cannot be forgotten as well. Having played for the Cleveland Browns for nine remarkable seasons, he accumulated an impressive record of 12,312 rushing yards and 106 touchdowns, ranking him 11th and sixth in NFL history, respectively.

Celebrated as a legend, leader, activist, and visionary, Brown’s impact on the game was acknowledged by the Cleveland Browns, highlighting his nine Pro Bowl selections, three MVP titles, and his well-deserved inclusion among the top 100 players in pro football history.

However, Brown’s influence extended far beyond the football field. Despite his extraordinary success in the NFL, he decided to cut short his career to pursue a second vocation in Hollywood.

With his involvement in over 30 films, including notable productions such as “Any Given Sunday,” “The Dirty Dozen,” “El Condor,” and “Three the Hard Way,” Brown showcased his versatility and talent on the silver screen.

His presence transcended the boundaries of sports, captivating audiences with roles ranging from battling aliens in “Mars Attacks!” to thrilling performances in action-packed films like “The Running Man” and “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.”

Jim Brown not only excelled in sports and entertainment but also became a prominent figure in the civil rights movement. As one of the most outspoken Black athletes of his time, he tirelessly advocated for using platforms to amplify important causes.

Notably, he convened the “Cleveland Summit,” uniting athletes such as Bill Russell and Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) with activists like Carl Stokes, to listen to Muhammed Ali and rally for his cause.

His influence reached beyond sports, inspiring fellow athletes to make a difference in their communities.

While Brown’s on-field brilliance and civil rights activism earned him admiration, his life was not without controversy. He faced multiple arrests, primarily related to charges of violence against women.

In 1999, his wife called 911, alleging that he had vandalized her car and threatened her life. Although Monique Brown later recanted her statement, Brown was acquitted of domestic threats but convicted of misdemeanor vandalism. His refusal to attend domestic violence counseling led to a six-month jail sentence.

News of Jim Brown’s passing elicited tributes from various sources. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell praised him as one of the most dominant players in any sport and recognized his role as a catalyst for change.

Former US President Barack Obama acknowledged Brown’s exceptional football career, activism, and advocacy for other Black athletes to speak out on important issues.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, where Brown was inducted in 1971, celebrated his Impact on and off the field, while Syracuse University, his alma mater, mourned the loss of an all-time great in both football and lacrosse.
