Largest-Ever Ethnic Clash in Manipur: Supreme Court Pronounces Several Orders to Restore Peace

Almost the whole of the past week has been very challenging for the state of Manipur situated in NorthEast India. The ongoing situation is probably the most heated ethnic clash in Manipur till date. The Supreme Court of India heard the matter on 8th May 2023 and termed the crisis of Manipur as a "humanitarian problem".

Background of The Ethnic Clash in Manipur

The entire crisis began when some Manipur tribals protested against the inclusion of the Meitei population within the purview of scheduled tribes in the state making them eligible for reservation whereas the Meitei tribe is numerically the largest in Manipur.

The protest soon escalated into a state wide ethnic clash in Manipur bringing in many more angles regarding partiality of the ruling BJP government towards the majority tribes, the Meitei and the Naga tribes while completely ignoring the welfare of the minority Kuki tribes. The Manipur CM Biren Singh has been accused of playing dirty ethnic majoritarian politics in the state.

What Did The Supreme Court Say About The Matter?

The Supreme Court took the matter on a very serious note and ordered immediate "restitution and stabilization". The Supreme Court also ordered arrangements for rehabilitating and relocating the victims of the ethnic clash in Manipur along with the provision of basic amenities like food and hygiene to displaced people. The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud said, "We have made our concern explicit about the need for protection of people and property and the need for restitution and stabilization. This is a humanitarian problem. We are concerned deeply about the loss of life and property."
