Kalakshetra Foundation Professor Arrested on Charges of Sexual Harassment of Students

 Sexual Harassment at Kalakshetra Foundation

Kalakshetra Foundation located in Chennai is a cultural hub for training students in arts, and crafts, dance styles, and traditional singing techniques. Hari Padman, a professor employed by Kalakshetra Foundation has been accused by a former student of the organization of sexual harassment.

Many students of Kalakshetra Foundation then came out vehemently against perpetrators committing sexual harassment and this has resulted in 4 staff members being dismissed from their jobs.

Action Taken on The Perpetrator by The Police

Action has been taken against Hari Padman based on only one complaint from the ex-student who was associated with the organization between 2015-2019. The All Women Police, Adyar registered an FIR against him on 31st March 2023 and after this, the accused had gone missing for many days.

However, the police confirmed today that, “...we have secured him. Further interrogation will be conducted with him before producing before a court for remand.”


Arrest After The Protests

The students of Kalakshetra had started massive protests on 30th March 2023 and demanded the dismissal of 3 officials namely, Sanjith Lal, Sai Krishnan and Sreenath. 4 officials were found guilty of grave charges of inappropriate behavior were then dismissed along with Hari Padman being arrested.



Further Action

The Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women has received over 90 complaints of sexual harassment from the Kalakshetra Foundation. After this, a 5-hour inquiry has been conducted by the Commission among the female students of the organization.
