External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in high-level diplomacy during his four-day visit to Portugal and Italy. In the first leg of his tour, he met with Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa to fortify India's bilateral relations with key European countries. The meeting aimed to address contemporary challenges and explore avenues for mutual cooperation.

During their discussion, Jaishankar conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and acknowledged Costa's guidance in advancing India-Portugal relations. The dialogue emphasized the significance of fostering stronger ties between the two nations.

In a separate meeting with Portuguese Foreign Minister Joao Cravinho, Jaishankar held productive talks concerning bilateral economic cooperation. They also exchanged views on geopolitical developments in regions such as West Asia, Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Indo-Pacific.

India and Portugal have cultivated robust and mutually beneficial relations across various domains over the years, underlining their commitment to bolstering collaboration. The ongoing transformations in India present opportunities to elevate their partnership to new heights, especially in the global workplace and digital domain.

During his visit, Jaishankar also met Augusto Santos Silva, President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, to discuss cooperation between two democracies in an ever-changing world.

The Ministry of External Affairs disclosed that Jaishankar's agenda included interactions with the Portugal-India Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Indian community in Portugal. This engagement aimed to reinforce the multifaceted connections between the two countries.

The visit also included an address to the Joint Session of the Senate's External Affairs and Defence Commission, EU Affairs Commission, and the India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group, along with meetings with members of the Indian community.
