Whether a 12-year-old carrying bundles of firewood to her house while her elder brother couldn't or her recent glory in weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu has always been a force to reckon with. In recent years, however, her power and talent have received due recognition and admiration in the form of awards and accolades. The 28-year-old weightlifter from Manipur received BBC Indian Sportswoman Of the Year to add to her already impressive tally. In doing so, she also became the first woman to win the Indian Sportswoman Of The Year (ISWOTY) award twice in a row. She won it in 2021 as well. In 2022, Chanu bagged a Gold medal in the 49 kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. She lifted a total of 201 kg and brought laurels to the country. Later on, she also claimed a silver medal at the World Weightlifting Championships in 2022. Earlier in 2018, Mirabai Chanu won the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, the highest sporting honor in the country. The same year, she was awarded the Padma Shri for her excellent contribution to sports in India. Wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, ace shuttler and winner of the inaugural ISWOTY P V Sindhu, and boxer Nikhat Zareen were also nominated for the BBC Indian Sportswoman Of The Year award.
