Indian PM Modi and Bhutanese King:-
A meeting was held by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk to review both the country's bilateral cooperation and discuss national interests. The Meeting occurred amid Bhutan’s efforts to separate parts of its boundary with China and uncertainty over the Doklam tri-junction.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra stated that the Indian government is closely following the developments that are affecting India’s national interests, and it would take some necessary measures to safeguard them.
However, he also noted that India’s relationship with Bhutan is based on shared values that include mutual sensitivity to each other concerns.
While Kwatra did not deny that the boundary issues were analyzed during the king’s meeting with Modi, he reiterated India’s position that tri-junctions must be finalized in consultation with all concerned countries.
Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lotay Tshering recently stated that Bhutan can separate some parts of the boundaries with China in a meeting or two and that all three countries would have an equal say in resolving the Doklam trijunction dispute. However, Tshering later clarified that Bhutan’s position on Doklam remains the same as in the past.
During the meeting, Modi restated India’s continued support of Bhutan’s socio-economic development and pledged to show up for Bhutan’s upcoming 13th five-year plan. India is also considering Bhutan’s request to sell energy for hydropower projects. Moreover, the two countries will explore non-hydro-renewable space and expedite the finalization of modalities for New hydroelectric projects.
