An advisory has
been released by the Indian Army cautioning the dissemination of fabricated
videos concerning the security scenario in Manipur, with emphasis on one
particular video showing an assault on an Assam Rifles outpost. “Misleading
videos are being spread by individuals with ulterior motives and do not provide
an accurate depiction of the present situation in the area," remarked the
armed force.
In light of ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, where mobs have been burning down homes, shops, and religious sites, and even assaulting a sitting lawmaker in Imphal, the Indian Army has urged citizens to rely solely on content from official and verified sources.
The Indian Army's
Spear Corps has taken to social media to warn the public about the falsified
videos circulating of the security status in Manipur. The videos, including one
allegedly depicting an attack on an Assam Rifles post, are being spread by
individuals with malicious intentions.
The Indian Army
was vocal in the matter and suggested that it is essential for everyone to
exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any news or video footage
before accepting it as truth.
On Wednesday,
clashes erupted in Churachandpur town as a result of protests organized by
tribal Kuki groups who were opposing a proposed amendment to the reservation
matrix in the state. This amendment sought to grant scheduled tribe (ST) status
to the Meitei community, who are in the majority.
The situation
quickly turned violent, leading to a widespread outbreak of violence throughout
the state. As a result, thousands of people were forced to flee their homes and
neighborhoods, which had been set ablaze.
The intensifying security crisis has led Governor Anusuiya Uikey to issue stringent guidelines. Commissioner T Ranjit Singh has issued a document instructing district magistrates, subdivisional magistrates, executive magistrates, and special executive magistrates to authorize the use of lethal force in rare cases when all other means of resolution, such as warnings, persuasion, and reasonable force have been exhausted, and the situation is considered unmanageable according to the law.
The violence that
erupted in several towns continued until late Thursday evening despite the
deployment of thousands of army and paramilitary personnel to restore peace.
The Army has
informed that the security crisis in Moreh and Kangpokpi has been effectively
tackled, and endeavors are underway to restore regularity in Imphal and
Churachandpur.
As a precaution,
additional troops have been deployed in Manipur, with more columns being
redeployed from Nagaland. To further bolster security measures, the Indian Air
Force will be conducting flying operations to transport additional Indian Army
columns starting tonight from Assam.
