Blue Tick on Twitter:-
Twitter has restored the coveted blue tick badges to certain high-profile accounts, including those with over one million followers, without requiring them to pay for a subscription. The blue tick is a symbol of verified accounts on Twitter, indicating that it is authentic and belongs to the person or entity it claims to represent. The decision to restore these badges comes after
Twitter suspended its verification program for several months due to the backlash it received for verifying controversial accounts. The move to reinstate badges to some accounts has raised questions about Twitter's verification process and whether it is being applied fairly and consistently.
Celebrities including Beyoncé, Harry Kane, Richard Osman, and Victoria Beckham are among those who have had their blue tick badges reinstated by Twitter. Even the BBC News Twitter account has regained its gold badge despite not paying for it.
In the past, Twitter used to provide blue tick verification badges for free as a tool of authentication to prevent the spread of misinformation through fake accounts. However, after the platform was bought by Elon Musk, the verification program was suspended for several months due to criticism for verifying controversial accounts. It led to questions about whether the verification process was being applied fairly and consistently. The recent decision to restore badges to some high-profile accounts without requiring a subscription has raised further concerns.
Currently, a blue tick on Twitter is no longer just a means of verification that an account is authentic but also an indicator that the account holder has subscribed to a paid service called Twitter Blue, which comes with a verification process attached.
The subscription fee for Twitter Blue varies depending on the location, but it is around $8 per month. Those who had blue ticks from the original verification process but opted not to pay the subscription fee started losing their blue ticks on April 20.
James O'Brien, a broadcaster with 1.1 million followers, confirmed that he did not pay for his blue tick, yet he got it back. He also observed that some accounts with fewer than 1 million followers had their blue ticks restored "anointed entirely at Elon Musk's discretion."
On Friday, Eliot Higgins, the founder of Bellingcat, confirmed that he and his organization were given their blue tick and verification for free. Elon Musk has claimed that he paid for subscriptions on behalf of celebrities such as Stephen King, William Shatner, and LeBron James, all of whom criticized the subscription scheme.
Despite having over 21 million followers, actor Ryan Reynolds, who also owns Wrexham football club, still has no blue tick. It was reported that removing the legacy blue ticks had to be done manually, so it is possible that the process of restoring them is also manual and will continue over the next few days. Twitter Blue has had a troubled launch due to fake accounts posing as official organizations, and recently, both subscribers and formerly verified accounts have looked identical.
Individuals who subscribe to Twitter's premium service, Twitter Blue, enjoy certain privileges, such as higher visibility of their tweets, longer individual posts, and fewer ads.
According to Elon Musk, Twitter was struggling financially when he took over, and the platform was losing approximately $4 million per day. Despite this, Twitter has not disclosed the number of subscribers who have signed up for Twitter Blue to date, but Sensor Tower estimated to TechCrunch that the Plateform had around 386,000 subscribers as of March 2023. However, this figure does not include subscriptions made via Twitter's website, and it is still a small fraction of its massive 300 million user base.
