Haryana Extends Internet Ban

In response to the recent outbreak of communal clashes in Nuh, Haryana, the state government has decided to extend the suspension of mobile internet services until August 8. The violence, which began during a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession near the Nalhar temple on July 31, has claimed the lives of six individuals, including two home guards and a cleric.

The ban on internet services has also been prolonged in Palwal until August 7, according to news agency PTI.

An official order issued by the government stated that the suspension of mobile internet services, bulk SMS, and dongle services, except for voice calls, has been prolonged within the jurisdiction of Nuh district until August 8, 2023. The order aims to maintain peace and public order in the district.

A separate order has also been issued for Palwal district, where the suspension of internet services will remain in effect until August 7.

The violence quickly escalated from Nuh to other districts in Haryana, prompting authorities to suspend mobile internet and SMS services on July 31. The situation deteriorated further, leading to mob violence in Gurugram, where numerous mosques were targeted, vehicles were set ablaze, and shops were destroyed. A total of 216 individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the communal clashes, and around 104 cases have been registered.

Police are closely monitoring social media accounts to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation that could worsen the situation. Despite warnings and strict actions from the Haryana Police, the violence continues to raise concerns, especially after social media accounts were filled with threats and provocative posts before the clashes.

Bajrang Dal leader Monu Manesar, a figure associated with communal tensions, posted a video on social media encouraging participation in the yatra. Although speculation arose that his involvement may have sparked the clashes, he did not participate in the procession, as confirmed by the police.
