Ex Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been selected as the new head coach of the Indian national cricket team and this means he is the youngest head coach to have been given this position at 42 years. This came out in the open when the BCCI informed everyone that Rahul Dravid turned down the opportunity to continue as the head coach of the Indian team beyond the just concluded T20 World Cup.

This was after a few incidences in the few months leading thereto that no one could imagine could occur. He stepped down from the position of the advisor for the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants last November but KKR has offered him a chance to return back to the team as a mentor. This particular aspect enjoyed its own fair share of success in the recent games that it supervised under the KKR leadership, and that contributed to his appointment in the same responsibility for the national team.

This new position came after the former left handed opener has a good playing record. Gambhir joined the Indian national cricket team in the year 2003 and has been regarded as one of the best openers in Indian cricket across all three formats. Being part of the team that was triumphant in the finals of the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 as well as in the 2011 50 over World Cup.

In his new found role as a highly passionate and an aggressive cricketer Gambhir is confronted with quite a number of problems. He will have to deal with several cricketing giants in his team, to replace one generation with another and for making the strategic switches which will keep India a formidable force to reckon with in the realm of cricket. India has scheduled tournaments like Champions Trophy, World Test Championship, T20 World Cup and 50 over World Cup in the next three years and it is going to be very testing for the team.

Gambhir’s appointment is also reflection of changes in leadership in Indian cricket and the trend is that younger players are being given the responsibilities. His leadership style, goals for the team, and management of the demands that come with the job of coaching a team that is always under pressure will be of interest to cricket lovers and experts.

The BCCI has backed Gambhir to build the future of the side, given his astute knowledge of the game and previous experience in mentoring roles. While India is now set to enter this new period of its cricketing journey under the leadership of Gambhir, the fans all over the world are waiting to see how this new captain will transform the future of their team.
