Since 2010 and 2014, the Indian government has allowed the prices of petrol and diesel to be determined by oil marketing companies, namely Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum. These companies set prices based on global crude oil prices that are updated daily at 6 am to ensure alignment with the prevailing market rates.

In 2017, a decision was made to change the frequency of price updates from every two weeks to daily updates.
