Former Mayor's Land Grabbing Scandal:-
Atiq Ahmad, a notorious mafia don turned politician, has been known for his illegal land grabbing activities. However, not many people are aware of his altercation with a member of Sonia Gandhi's family over a piece of property in the posh Civil Lines area of Prayagraj.
In 2007, Atiq allegedly forcefully occupied the property belonging to Veera Gandhi, a relative of Sonia Gandhi's father-in-law, Feroz Gandhi. As Atiq was an MP from Phulpur and his Samajwadi Party was in power in the state, Veera was unable to receive any help from the authorities.
Desperate for assistance, Veera turned to Sonia Gandhi, who intervened and successfully helped Veera retrieve her property. Atiq was forced to return the keys to the rightful owner.
Veera Gandhi's family owned the Palace Theater located on MG Marg in Civil Lines, and a coveted property behind the theater was assigned to her in a family partition. Atiq had acquired some land in the vicinity from the Asthana family, and upon learning of Veera's property, he used his henchmen to forcibly take possession and lock it up.

Veera Gandhi had attempted to retrieve her property through the local police and government officials but was unsuccessful. Sonia Gandhi's intervention through Rita Bahuguna Joshi, an influential leader of the Congress in Prayagraj, led to the matter being resolved. Atiq had to back down, and Veera did not file a case.
Veera Gandhi sold many of her properties in Prayagraj and relocated to Mumbai. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the then-state president of the Congress party, stated that Sonia Gandhi had requested her to intervene, and as a result, the district administration took action, and Atiq had to retreat.
This incident sheds light on the powerful influence that gangsters like Atiq wielded in the state, where they often acted with impunity. Atiq was accused in over 100 criminal cases, including the murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal. Despite this, he remained a member of the Samajwadi Party and even contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from inside the prison.
The recent killing of Atiq has also led to the search for his wife, Shaista Parveen, who is on the run and has been named in several sensational killings, including that of Umesh Pal. The hunt for Parveen underscores the long-standing problem of organized Crime in the state, where criminals have often enjoyed political protection and are able to evade justice.
