Farmers and Workers Join Hands in Delhi in Protest: Know the Demands Placed

The Ramlila Ground of Delhi could be seen covered with a wave of red as thousands of farmers and workers from all over the country entered the area holding red flags on 5th April 2023 (Wednesday). The three organizations involved in organizing the protest were the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), and All India Agricultural Workers Union (AIAWU).

Farmers and Workers Protest in Delhi:

Strong slogans such as ‘Modi Government Down Down’ and ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ were raised by the farmers and workers to channel their anger toward the Modi government.

The angered farmers and workers protested against the policies of the Modi government, which had taken away the rights these farmers managed to get after a long round of protests against the Farm Bills.

Harpal Singh from Hoshiarpur said, “We could win one battle in 2021 over the farm Bills. However, we are determined to fight the next battle for MSP, as per Swaminathan Commission’s recommendation.”

Problems of Farmers and Lack of Government Action

Surendra Kumar Singh, a farmer from Chattisgarh, shared his problem, “During the pandemic, the crop perished…could not be transported. Last year, elephants destroyed the crop completely. They even enter homes…There is no security of life or livelihood for us.” Another worker, Asha Devi, said, “Our job includes cleaning Anganwadi centers, preparing/ feeding meals to children, and other things that a karyakarta may instruct. We clean up children’s excreta too. Yet, we are paid Rs 3,250 per month.”

Demands Expressed During Protest

Some of the demands that have surfaced out of the innumerous problems that farmers and workers have been facing lately are as follows:

  1. Guarantee that the MSP will be implemented in a full-fledged manner

  2. Reversal of the 4 new labor codes

  3. More work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme

It is going to be another tough battle for farmers and workers to convince the Central government to give in to their demands. It is heartbreaking to see that the section of society which supports all other people has to stoop to such levels to have their demands heard.
