In an unprecedented turn of events in the Cricket World Cup 2023, South Africa and Afghanistan made history in the 42nd match on Friday, November 10. This clash, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, marked a significant moment in the world of One Day Internationals (ODIs).

For the first time in 52 years of ODI cricket, the year 2023 has witnessed an astounding 200 ODI matches. The South Africa vs Afghanistan encounter became the 200th ODI of the year, surpassing the previous record of 191 games set in 2007.

Sri Lanka leads the charge in 2023, participating in the most ODI matches with 31 games, followed closely by India and New Zealand, jointly holding the second spot with 29 matches each. In contrast, Canada and Jersey have been part of the least ODIs, playing only five matches in 2023.

The historical significance of this achievement becomes more apparent when considering that the first-ever ODI was played 52 years ago between Australia and England. Since then, a total of 4699 ODI matches have been played, with the recent South Africa vs Afghanistan clash adding to this rich history.

In the thrilling encounter, South Africa faced a mini scare during the 245-run chase against Afghanistan. The Proteas, tested by Afghanistan's spinners in the latter part of the innings, ultimately triumphed with Rassie van der Dussen and Andile Phehlukwayo guiding them home. With seven wins in nine league stage matches, South Africa is set to face nemesis Australia in the upcoming semifinals, further intensifying the Cricket World Cup 2023 excitement.
