In a move that has escalated tensions between India and China, Congress MLA Ninong Ering has penned a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for a resolute response to China's recent release of a standard map that includes disputed regions like India's Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh.
The timing of this letter is significant, as it urges PM Modi to address the issue during the scheduled G20 Summit in Delhi on September 9-10.
Ering, who represents the Pasighat-West constituency bordering the Chinese-controlled Tibet Autonomous Region, expressed deep concern over the "deliberate incident" by the People's Republic of China (PRC), which has ignited resentment among the people of Arunachal Pradesh. He highlighted that China has attempted similar actions, including renaming locations in the region in 2023, 2021, and 2017, to assert its territorial claims.
The Congress MLA underlined that the recent release of the "PRC Standard Map" is part of a larger strategy that threatens the sovereignty and integrity of India.
He also emphasised the historical significance of Arunachal Pradesh, a region scarred by memories of the 1962 Sino-Indian war. Ering also mentioned the sacrifice of Indian Army personnel during the Galwan Valley clash in 2020 and the Indian government's commitment to safeguarding the nation's land.
Ering, while expressing confidence in the Indian Army's capabilities, labelled the map release as an attack on India's sovereignty.
He urged PM Modi to raise the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the G20 Summit, emphasising that global condemnation through relevant state-run media is crucial to counter China's aggression.
China's 2023 edition of the "standard map" includes India's disputed territories, Taiwan, and the South China Sea. In response, India lodged a strong protest against these baseless claims, asserting that they only hinder the resolution of the boundary question.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasised that China's actions further complicate the sensitive issue.
The release of this letter by Ninong Ering has sparked discussions about India's stance on China's territorial assertions. As the G20 Summit approaches, all eyes are on Prime Minister Modi's response to this significant diplomatic challenge.
