China Square Cheap Shop Reopened: Stiff Dissent from Kenyan Traders

On 6th March 2023, the Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce ordered the reopening of the little China Square Cheap Shop which had been shut down due to allegations of incorporating trade practices which were utterly competitive and detrimental to the indigenous Kenyan traders. While making the decision to reopen the China Square Cheap Shop, the KCCC reasoned, “The Chamber looks forward to an equal and fair treatment of all businesses across board to ensure a conducive business environment for all.” China Square Cheap Shop The specialty of the China Square Cheap Shop The China Square Cheap Shop is located in the Unicity Mall of the Kenyan Capital city of Nairobi. The China Square Shop had begun its journey only on 29th January 2023 and soon became a major center of attraction and the talk of the town since retail items were sold at very cheap prices. Protests by Kenyan Traders On 28th February 2023, Kenyan traders came out vehemently against the China Square Cheap Shop since it had cut down their businesses by selling items at such a discounted rate. The Kenyan traders said, “We want the Chinese out of Kenya. If the Chinese become the manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and even hawkers, where will Kenyans go?” One of the Kenyan traders talked about the beauty equipment that he sold at 43$. The same was being sold by the China Cheap Shop at 21$. The trader from Kenya said that the high price of his item was due to the taxes and duties charged. Amidst such protests, the China Cheap Shop had been closed down until further notice owing to security concerns on 28th February 2023.
