Sells Tomatoes

Seems like there is some relief for the residents of Delhi-NCR. The cost of tomatoes is expected to decrease due to the government's plan to regulate prices.

In an effort to decrease the high prices of tomatoes, the Department of Consumer

Affairs has instructed National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) and National Cooperative Consumers Federation(NCCF) to purchase tomatoes from Mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

A press release revealed,” The stocks of tomato will be distributed through retail outlets at discounted prices to the consumers in Delhi-NCR region by Friday, this week."

According to the press release, the target areas will be regions where retail prices have witnessed the highest surge within the past month. The selection of distribution centres has been based on the absolute increase in retail prices over the past month, specifically, the ones where the current prices exceed the national average.

The past few days have become witness to the sharp increase in tomato prices nationwide, leading to a huge impact on consumers' household budgets. These price surges are the result of temporary disruptions in the supply chain and crop damage due to adverse weather conditions. Such factors often contribute to sudden spikes in tomato prices.

The markets in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh primarily rely on tomato supplies from Maharashtra, particularly from regions such as Satara, Narayangaon, and Nashik.

This supply chain is expected to continue until the end of the current month.

The major sources of tomato arrivals in Delhi-NCR are Himachal Pradesh as well as Kolar in Karnataka. It is expected that new crop arrivals from the Nashik district will come soon, which will contribute to the supply of tomatoes.

Furthermore, additional supplies from the Narayangaon and Aurangabad regions might be available in August, further boosting tomato availability. Additionally, arrivals from Madhya Pradesh are expected to start, which is expected to result in a decrease in tomato prices.
