The Government is all set to launch a new pan-India tracking system by May 17 that will help recover lost mobiles.

The Centre for the Department of Telecommunications has developed the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) system to help block or trace mobile phones all over India that have been stolen or lost.

The tracking system, which has already been deployed in March this year in Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and the Northeast region, will be launched for pan-India deployment this week.

This system has access to the IMEI database of all mobile operators, which aids the CEIR to block the phones that have been stolen or lost.
The Centre for the Department of Telecommunications has developed the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR)

This system has access to the IMEI database of all mobile operators, which aids the CEIR to block the phones that have been stolen or lost. Based on their IMEI numbers, these phones can be blocked or tracked, even if the thief changes the SIM card.

A DoT official informed that CEIR is prepared to be launched across the corners of India on May 17.

When Rajkumar Upadhyay, the Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman Project Board at the Centre for the Department of Telecommunications, was reached for confirmation of the news, he said, "The system is ready, and now it will be deployed across India, in this quarter. This will enable people to block and track their lost mobile phones. One of the common practices is that miscreants change the IMEI number of stolen mobile phones, which prevents tracking and blocking of such handsets. It was a national security issue. The CEIR will be able to block any cloned mobile phones on the network with the help of various databases."

He further added that the system has an internal mechanism that will aid the government from facing revenue loss

He further added that the system has an internal mechanism that will aid the government from facing revenue loss, a significant development that will establish CEIR as the leading system in the sector.

Whether CEIR will be a resourceful addition to the tracking and recovering process of lost and smuggled phones will be clear in the upcoming months.
