The Donald Trump biopic "The Apprentice" sparked controversy at Cannes with its unflinching portrayal, earning praise from critics but threats of legal action from Trump's team.

The Apprentice; a satirical biopic of Donald Trump as a young real estate developer in 70s and 80s New York had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday. The film by Ali Abbasi has been well received and critically acclaimed except by Trump and his entourage.

The Apprentice stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and Jeremy Strong as the machiavellian lawyer and mentor Roy Cohn. The film is based on a fictionalized version of the early life of Trump and depicts the story of rape, adultery, and corruption as he rises to power.

One of the most outrageous scenes involves Trump raping his first wife Ivana in a scene that supposedly is based on his first wife’s claim that she was raped in divorce proceedings that were later withdrawn. Bakalova who plays Ivana defended the scene as part of showing how Trump’s “decency is dying out. ”

Trump’s campaign communications director Steven Cheung said the “garbage” film contained “pure fiction” and characterizations that were “blatantly false” and vowed to pursue legal action against the “Hollywood elite” for “election interference”. But director Abbasi thinks that Trump might be “surprised” by the subtlety.

Most reviewers were positive while some described Stan as ‘a miracle’ at rendering Trump’s mannerisms and personality. Some viewers thought the dark comedy went too far in portraying the still politically relevant Trump as human.
