The US
Citizenship Act 2023, proposed by Congresswoman Linda Sánchez, offers a way to
citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. It includes an immediate
path to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS holders, and certain farm workers.
Additionally,
those who pass background checks and pay taxes may obtain citizenship in five
years without the risk of deportation.
The proposed
legislation aims to modify the immigration system related to employment by
removing the limits on the number of individuals allowed from each country.
This change is intended to benefit individuals with advanced STEM degrees obtained from American universities by providing them with better opportunities to obtain permanent residency (green cards).

The Act also aims
to enhance the chances of workers in industries with lower wages to secure
green cards, grant work authorization to dependents of H-1B visa holders, and
prevent the children of H-1B visa holders from losing their eligibility as they
grow older.
In addition, the
proposed legislation includes a trial program aimed at stimulating economic
growth in specific regions and encourages higher wages for skilled
non-immigrant workers, ensuring they are not unfairly pitted against American
workers.
Moreover, it
addresses the issue of discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ families, offers
protection for vulnerable groups such as orphans, widows, and children, and
permits immigrants with approved family sponsorship petitions to temporarily
reunite with their families in the United States while they await their green
cards.
Congresswoman Sánchez, who comes from a Mexican immigrant background, expressed her pride in presenting the US Citizenship Act. She views it as a groundbreaking and comprehensive framework that will effectively address the flaws in our current immigration system.

The US
Citizenship Act aims to enhance our economy, strengthen border security, and
establish a pathway to citizenship for numerous immigrants residing and working
in the country. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the significant
contributions of immigrants to the formation of America and called for a
comprehensive reform of immigration laws.
The proposed Act
intends to revamp the family-based immigration system, ensuring that families
can stay together by addressing visa backlogs and granting immediate family
status to spouses and children of green card holders. It also suggests
increasing the per-country limits for family-based immigration.
The immigration
system in the USA is broken and needs a comprehensive solution that reflects
the country's values. The solution should be based on two fundamental
principles: a commitment to the rule of law and recognition of America's
identity as a nation of immigrants. The diversity of America should be
celebrated and maintained.
