The US Senate has given its approval for Geeta Rao Gupta, an Indian American, to become the Ambassador at Large for Global Women's Issues in the State Department. This role will involve advocating for women's rights and promoting gender equality on a global scale.

Her appointment has been welcomed by the department, which has expressed its eagerness to see her working towards promoting women's and girls' rights through US foreign policy.

Gupta received confirmation approval from the Senate through a vote that took place earlier this week, with a 51 to 47 vote margin in her favor.

Gupta has drawn attention to the widespread existence of gender disparities and injustices that impede women's complete engagement in the economy, regardless of their geographic location.

Women face a range of challenges that compromise their safety and mobility, including threats of violence and fear of violence, particularly in conflict and emergencies. These crises also leave women vulnerable to being unable to provide for their families or maintain their livelihoods.

During her confirmation hearing last year, Gupta highlighted the plight of women in the world and how they are affected by various challenges. Women face various forms of inequities and indignities in different parts of the world, including the United States, that restrict their participation in the economy. These challenges also impact women's mobility and threaten their safety and security daily.

It is believed that Gupta's expertise and experience in working with women and girls in crises will be invaluable in addressing these challenges.

In her new role, Gupta will work toward promoting gender equality and advancing women's and girls' rights around the world. She will also work to integrate gender perspectives into US foreign policy and programs to ensure that women's rights are not overlooked in decision-making processes.

Her appointment is a testament to the United States' commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls globally.
