Birthday Celebration:-
In the matter of Pugazendhi Thangaraj v. The Inspector of Police, the Madras High Court on 18th January 2023 (Wednesday) has taken a liberal approach and ruled in favor of Pugazendhi Thangaraj, a film director, allowing him to conduct a literary competition this week to celebrate the birth anniversary of LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran. Through the order, the Madras High Court canceled the restrictions imposed by the police. The police had previously not given any permission for celebration of the LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran’s birthday or events related to it. Birthday Celebration Birthday Celebration-Birthday Celebration Who was LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran? V Prabhakaran was the founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the group responsible for the assassination of the former Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi. The LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran has fostered the ideas of Tamil nationalism in Tamil Nadu and was a staunch follower of militant nationalism as well. Many youths were influenced by the LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran’s idea of self rule in Tamil Nadu. His ideas are still cherished by many. LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran was killed by the Sri Lankan armed forces at the age of 54 years. Birthday Celebration Birthday Celebration The Madras High Court’s Warning G Chandrashekharan J. while taking the decision regarding a speech to be delivered at the occasion of LTTE Leader V Prabhakaran’s birth anniversary, said, “It is made clear that the speech shall not be against the sovereignty of the nation, should not affect the sovereignty of the friendly relations of SAARC nations. Other conditions are upheld.” The judgment can be looked at from an extremely positive angle. It reflects the ideal of a true democracy where there is respect for indigenous culture, delicately balanced with the sense of oneness of the nation. The judgment is nothing but an exemplary manifestation of the freedom of speech and expression in its true sense as it promotes inclusiveness of all opinions and beliefs.
