After the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) gave the “final warning” for the climate crisis, countries have started taking up this issue seriously. On Thursday, the U.S.government has revealed a plan to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions emitted by the power industry.
This move has been classified as a huge step towards decarbonising the American economy. The plan seeks to restrict the amount of carbon dioxide these power plants can release into the atmosphere. These power plants are responsible for emitting more than a quarter of the total emissions.
Though this is a great step towards tackling climate change, it requires all power plants to either install billions of dollars of carbon capture equipment that will extract the carbon dioxide or substitute super-low-emissions hydrogen as a fuel or shut down. The plan envisions that new and existing large natural gas plants will install CCS to remove 90% of their carbon emissions by 2035. Alternatively, they are to co-fire with 30% hydrogen by 2032 and 96% hydrogen by 2038. The plan by Biden’s government aims to reduce more than 617 million tonnes of carbon emissions from coal plants and new gas plants between 2028 and 2042. This 617 million tonnes of carbon emissions is equal to the annual emissions of 137 million passenger vehicles.
Administrator Michael Regan stated, "EPA’s proposal relies on proven, readily available technologies to limit carbon pollution and seizes the momentum already underway in the power sector to move toward a cleaner future". He is set to elaborate on the proposal on Thursday at a youth-focused speech that is going to be held at the University of Maryland. While speaking to the reporters, White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi said, "When you look at what is in the rule and what is proposed we are absolutely in line with the president's goal".
