Australia commenced their journey in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 with an impressive win against Sri Lanka, securing a five-wicket victory at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Monday. The Player of the Match title was bestowed upon Adam Zampa, whose exceptional four-wicket performance dismantled the Lankan batting lineup.

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to start batting. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera, the opening duo, gave the game a rousing start by scoring 125 runs. The Australian bowlers initially had trouble, but Pat Cummins' dismissal of Nissanka provided the vital turning point. Later, he got rid of Perera for a noteworthy 78, and the Australians took control.

Despite Charith Asalanka's resistance with 25 runs off 38 balls, Sri Lanka's middle-order faltered. Zampa capitalized on the situation, and Mitchell Starc contributed with a couple of dismissals, bundling out Sri Lanka for a mere 209 with over six overs remaining.

Australia's innings had a shaky beginning, with Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madhushanka dismissing David Warner and Steve Smith in the fourth over. However, half-centuries by Mitchell Marsh (52) and Josh Inglis (58) stabilized the Australian innings. Glenn Maxwell (31*) and Marcus Stoinis (20*) guided the team to victory.

In response to a question about his performance, Zampa remarked, "My job is to take wickets in the middle order for the team. In the last game, I came close, but tonight, I felt more confident. Being the victor is enjoyable. Despite giving up a few runs, I need to have the wicket-taking approach.

In the inaugural match of the 2023 World Cup, Australia's strong start establishes them as a formidable contender in the tournament, while Sri Lanka faces the challenge of regrouping for their upcoming fixtures.
