Hosting the Commonwealth Games 2026

The Commonwealth Games 2026 had been planned to be hosted by the Australian state of Victoria. This has put the organization of the global games in doubt.

Why Did Victoria Back Out?

Reportedly, the state of Victoria has backed out from the responsibility of hosting the Commonwealth Games 2026 on the grounds of cost overruns. Dan Andrews, the Premier for the state of Victoria in Australia said that the projected cost was initially 2.6 Australian billion dollars however after the whole plan was chalked out, the budget rocketed up to 7 Australian billion dollars.

Andrews made a bold statement, “Frankly A$6-A$7 billion for a 12-day sporting event, we're not doing that…I will not take money out of hospitals and schools to fund an event that is three times the cost as estimated and budgeted for last year.”

Background of The Issue

The Commonwealth Games are organized for the countries which were earlier the British colonies. Recently the Commonwealth Games have lost their significance. Very few countries were interested in volunteering for hosting the Commonwealth Games 2026. The state of Victoria from Australia was the sole contender when the bids were released last year.
