A jail official on Tuesday revealed that female inmates at the central jail in Indore, Madhya Pradesh are currently being trained in crafting rakhis.
The prison officials further said the rakhis produced by the prisoners are available for sale, adding, ‘’It will be sold alongside other items manufactured within the prison’’.
Dr Alka Sonkar, the Central Jail Superintendent, provided further details about the initiative. She informed ANI, “About 40 women prisoners are making rakhi here and they are also being trained for the same."
She also termed this initiative as an effort to make the prisoners self-sufficient once they are released. Sonkar further revealed that under this initiative the women prisoners have received training in making sweets and various other items every now and then.
The aim behind this is to empower these women to lead their lives as responsible citizens after their release, rather than returning to a life of crime.
The jail superintendent further informed that the items produced within the prison are made available for sale to the public through a shop situated outside the jail. The rakhis produced by the inmates will also be available for purchase at this shop.
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the final day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravana, which usually falls in the month of August. For 2023, Raksha Bandhan is scheduled to be observed on August 30.
