Congress leader and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Barpeta district of Assam in connection with a case pertaining to an alleged assault on a woman police official.
Mevani expressed unwavering confidence in the judiciary and voiced hope for a fair trial during his interaction with reporters prior to his court appearance.
Accusing the BJP-led government in Assam, helm, helmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Mevani labeled the charges against him as false and premeditated. He emphasized that the case not only lacked substance but was also meticulously planned, asserting his respect for the court and his commitment to attend hearings as required.
The incident at the core of the case dates back to April of the preceding year, when Mevani was apprehended for purportedly assaulting a female Assam police officer while being escorted from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar. Subsequently, the Barpeta police detained him and filed a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 294/323/353/354 of the Indian Penal Code at the Barpeta Road police station on April 21.
This isn't the first time Mevani has appeared before the Barpeta court in relation to this case. On a previous occasion, July 17 to be precise, the Congress MLA presented himself before the Chief Judicial Magistrate to address the matter.
