On Saturday (28th January 2023), the Modi government renamed the famous Mughal Gardens at the Rashtrapati Bhavan as “Amrit Udyan”. Today (29th January 2023), President Draupadi Murmu is all set to inaugurate the Amrit Udyan at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. This day is being observed as Udyan Utsav 2023. The Mughals Garden The Mughals Garden-The Mughals Garden Symbolism behind The Name “Amrit Udyan” The Modi Government has said that the name “Mughal Gardens” reflects remains of colonial thought in India. Therefore, it was renamed as “Amrit Udyan”. The new name also denotes the attempts made by the government to create a New India free from all kinds of external influences and prevalence of slavery. Dharmendra Pradhan, a Union Minister, remarked on this change by calling it “a powerful symbol of our nation's progress and a reflection of a brighter future for New India.” The Mughals Garden The Mughals Garden-The Mughals Garden Criticism by The Opposition The naming of the Amrit Udyan at the Rashtrapati Bhavan has not been welcomed on a positive note. Rajya Sabha member and a politician for TMC, Mr. Derek O’ Brien has said, “Who knows, they might now want to rename the Eden Gardens and call it Modi Gardens! They should focus on creating jobs, controlling inflation and protecting the precious resources of LIC and SBI.” Many opposition leaders have asked the Modi government to focus on problems which are much more important and urgent than the Amrit Udyan. Some have called these attempts of the Modi government as well as the Uttar Pradesh government as an “attempt to rewrite history” and to destroy India’s heritage and culturally rich past.
