Mumbai, July 5, 2023: In a surprising turn of events, Ajit Pawar, the nephew of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, has made a bold move by approaching the Election Commission (EC) and staking claim to the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and its party symbol.

The decision has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Maharashtra, where the NCP has been a prominent force for decades. The unexpected development unfolded this morning when Ajit Pawar, a prominent NCP leader, arrived at the Election Commission’s office in New Delhi.

Accompanied by a group of supporters, Pawar submitted a formal letter claiming his right to lead the NCP and asserting that he had the majority support of the party’s members.

Urges EC for the Name and Symbol of the Party
Ajit Pawar's NCP group has submitted more than 40 affidavits of support from MLAs and MPs to the Election Commission.

Speculation about a potential power struggle within the NCP has been rife in recent months. Ajit Pawar, who previously held the position of Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, had been at odds with his uncle, Sharad Pawar, over several political issues. However, the sudden move to stake claim to the party and its symbol has caught many off guard.

Speaking to the media after his meeting with the Election Commission officials, Ajit Pawar expressed confidence in his decision. He stated, “I have the support of a significant number of NCP members who believe in my leadership. It is time for a new direction for our party, and I am ready to take on the responsibility.”

The move by Ajit Pawar has raised concerns among loyalists of Sharad Pawar, who have been staunchly supportive of the veteran leader for years. Many party members and political analysts were taken aback by the suddenness of the development and the apparent rift within the Pawar family.

Sharad Pawar, the founding member of the NCP and a respected political figure, has yet to issue an official statement regarding his nephew’s move. The veteran leader, known for his astute political maneuvers, is likely to respond in due course, shedding light on his stance and the party’s future direction.

The Election Commission has acknowledged the receipt of Ajit Pawar’s claim and assured a thorough review of the matter. The commission will scrutinize the documents provided by both sides and consider the party’s constitution, legal provisions, and precedents before arriving at a decision.

As the news of Ajit Pawar’s move spread, it is expected to have far-reaching implications for Maharashtra politics. The NCP, which has been a key player in the state’s political landscape, may witness a significant shift in power dynamics if the Election Commission validates Ajit Pawar’s claim. The move could lead to a split within the party, with loyalists aligning themselves with Ajit Pawar or Sharad Pawar.

Political analysts anticipate a period of uncertainty and intense political maneuvering as both factions within the NCP attempt to consolidate their positions and secure the loyalty of party members.

The coming days and weeks are likely to witness intense lobbying, backroom negotiations, and public posturing as the future of the NCP hangs in the balance.
