Accidental Firing Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi Mahavihara

A tragic incident unfolded at Mahabodhi Mahavihara in Bodh Gaya as an accidental firing claimed the life of a Bihar State Armed Police (BSAP) havildar. The mishap occurred on the shrine's campus, resulting in the immediate death of the havildar, identified as Amarjit Kumar Yadav. Amarjit was deployed as part of the security detail at the revered site, where BSAP jawans are responsible for maintaining safety.

After the sad incident at 1:40 pm, visitors and worshippers were turned away for almost half an hour. Initial reports indicate that the havildar was killed when the carbine he was carrying unintentionally went off, sending him down to the ground where he sustained fatal injuries.

The District Magistrate and Chairman of the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee, Thiyagarajan SM, visited the area and spoke with the BSAP commandant, as reported by District Public Relations Officer Deepak Chandra Dev.

According to SSP Ashish Bharti, who provided insight into the ongoing investigation, the havildar was shot when the carbine inadvertently discharged. The area was processed by forensic and ballistics experts after the discovery of four spent cartridges. CCTV footage and other data are being carefully examined as investigators work to determine what caused the tragedy.

The Mahabodhi Mahavihara, which experienced bomb blasts in 2013, has since fortified its security measures. Visitors navigate a three-layer security process that involves metal detectors, frisking, and baggage scans. Electronic devices are banned on the premises, which is also equipped with high-resolution night vision CCTVs for comprehensive coverage.

The accidental loss of the BSAP havildar's life is a somber reminder of the risks undertaken by security personnel in safeguarding sacred sites and the people who visit them. The investigation will shed light on the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident and will likely prompt further review and reinforcement of safety protocols.
