AAP Leader Sanjay Singh

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh was suspended from the Rajya Sabha on July 24 for the entire monsoon session of parliament for "violation" of the chair's directives.

Consequently, he will be barred from participating in the remainder of the monsoon session of Parliament. Once the motion proposed by Union Minister Piyush Goyal was backed by the House, Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar officially announced the suspension of the AAP leader.

The decision to suspend Singh did not go well with AAP leader and Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, who described it as unfortunate. Bharadwaj stated that they might not have been upset if Singh was suspended for speaking up for the truth, but they regret what happened to him.

During the Rajya Sabha session, Singh, along with other opposition members, was raising the demand for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue concerning Manipur. However, their request was not accepted, and instead, the Question Hour began.

Bharadwaj stated that they might not have been upset if Singh was suspended for speaking up for the truth, but they regret what happened to him.

Despite that, Singh walked to the Well of the House to press for his demand. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar initially asked him to return to his seat, but when Sanjay Singh did not follow his instruction Dhankar said, “I name Sanjay Singh”.

After Dhankar named the AAP leader, Union Minister and Leader of the House, Piyush Goyal, took the initiative to propose a motion to suspend Sanjay Singh. Goyal expressed “This kind of behaviour, coming into the Well and disturbing the House, is completely against the ethics and rules of the House."

Following that, he requested the chair to initiate action against Singh. On behalf of the government, Goyal moved the motion seeking Singh's suspension for the remaining duration of the current session.

On receiving Chairman Dhankar's permission, Goyal put forward the motion that sought Singh's suspension from participating in the session until its last day.

Chairman Dhankar then said, "The motion is that Sanjay Singh is suspended for the entire duration of this session having repeatedly violated the directives of the chair."

Subsequently, the motion was put to a vote, and the House approved it through both a show of hands and a voice vote. As a result, Sanjay Singh was officially suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the entire duration of the ongoing session.
