Increasing Obesity:- India, a land known for its culture, known for its diversity, known for movies, which was once known for malnourished children made it to the charts again but this time it’s for a different reason. Guess what? For diabetes and obesity. Yes, it’s said but it is the reality. India over the recent years with an alarmingly high rate of its citizens becoming overweight or obese has caused several other health related issues like heart attack that our healthcare infrastructure is not able to handle. There are several reasons behind it, some of them we discuss in the article. Increasing Obesity Increasing Obesity Change in Economy One of the main reasons for the increase in obesity in India is the changing nature of the country's economy. From the historical labor-intensive agricultural to economy-based India to present industrialized and urbanized India led people to shift towards a more sedentary and comfortable lifestyle. Many people now work in office jobs that require long periods of sitting. With poor urban infrastructure, with high stress and with rapid tech advancements, there are fewer opportunities for physical activity in our daily life. This lack of physical activity, combined with a diet high in processed and unhealthy foods proves to be deadly contributing to the rise in obesity. Increase in Consumption of Fast Food Another factor contributing to the increase in obesity in India is the growing presence of unhealthy foods. As the country's economy has developed, there has been a proliferation of fast-food chains and convenience stores with foods that are easy to prepare/consume. These foods are often cheaper and more convenient than healthier options, making them more appealing to people with busy lifestyles. But the caveat is that these ready-made foods are low in nutrients and high in sugar content. Also, such products are made with cheaper alternatives to cut down the costs and research has proven that such products are potentially hazardous to the human body leading to obesity, diabetes, and other health complications. Increasing Obesity in India          Increasing Obesity in India Contribution of Culture Then comes the cultural factor. India being the land of festivals and light celebrates many colorful and grand festivals all over the year. It is common in India for people to show their affection and hospitality through the sharing of food. This can lead to overconsumption of high-calorie sweets and fried foods, which are usually served at social gatherings. Increasing Obesity in India          Increasing Obesity in India-Increasing Obesity Lack of Availability of Healthy Food There is a lack of access to affordable and convenient healthy food options. This is also a contributing factor to the rise of obese patients in India. With modern and well expanded supply chain facilities by FMCG industries, fresh fruits and vegetables which are in general managed by small vendors with low capital to transport safely are expensive or unavailable, while processed and unhealthy foods are more readily available and affordable in many parts of our country. This makes it difficult for people to make healthy food choices, particularly for those living in low-income areas and job individuals who are usually preoccupied with their work stress. Increasing Obesity in India          Increasing Obesity in India-Increasing Obesity Conclusions Even with smartphones and internet available in the nook and corner of our country, there is a lack of awareness about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity in India. Many people focus on the taste and time to prepare, and the risks associated simply fall in their blind spot leading to obesity and hence, other health related issues. It is high time that we address this issue to the public and save our future from crumbling and take it to its zenith. Let us take an oath to consume enough healthy food and balance our food chart for a long and prosperous life! Do share your thoughts with us in the comment section and STAY HEALTHY!!!
